Temporary Pet Care

If you are struggling with a crisis situation, Lost Our Home offers a Temporary Care Program for families in need of temporary placement for their pet(s). The purpose of this program is to be able to reunite pets with their families following a time of crisis. This program offers 30 to 90 days of care, 90 days being the absolute maximum. Please read through the following in its entirety to learn more about this program and its requirements.

Medical Requirements:
Dogs: Rabies vaccination, Distemper/Parvo (DA2PPv) vaccination, Bordatella vaccination, proof of spay/neuter
Cats: FVRCP vaccination, negative FeLV/FIV test, proof of spay/neuter

In cases where pets are missing any of the above requirements, Lost Our Home will assist with having these things done. Pets that are a part of our Temporary Care Program must be spayed/neutered either before entering the program or while they are in the program. If you do not wish to spay/neuter your pet(s), we are unable to assist you with no exceptions.


Temporary Care Program Fees:

The cost of having your pet(s) in our Temporary Care Program will be determined prior to your pet(s) checking in. A Lost Our Home staff member will discuss this with you based on your situation and costs for the program can be paid weekly/monthly. Owners are responsible for reimbursing costs for spay/neuter and vaccinations that Lost Our Home provide. Lost Our Home does use email as a primary source of contact. Please be sure to check the email you provide to us for questions, responses, or anything else regarding your Temporary Care Program application.

If a staff member of Lost Our Home contacts you, and you do not respond within 48 hours, your spot will be given to the next person on the waiting list. Please note that due to the high demand of this program, Lost Our Home is not always able to assist right away. In circumstances that we are not able to help immediately, we do have a wait-list that your pet(s) can be placed on.

Low Income Boarding

Lost Our Home offers a low income boarding service to pet owners who are unable to afford standard boarding fees at other boarding facilities. We can offer up to a maximum of 30 days of boarding (dependent on availability).
For pets that require medication or have other medical needs, Lost Our Home's ability to accommodate these needs are case-by-case. Please be as thorough as possible about your pet's special needs on your Low Income Boarding application and a Lost Our Home staff member will further consult with you once the application is reviewed.



Low Income Boarding Requirements:
  • Definite check in and check out dates for your pet(s)
  • All fees are due at the time of check in (no exceptions)
  • Proof of required medical information at check in (no exceptions)

Dog Medical Requirements/Prices:
  • Rabies vaccination

Standard 5x5 kennel: $13.00/day for one dog, $23.00/day for two dogs (in the same kennel)

Large 5x10 kennel (required for dogs over 40 lbs):$18.00/day for one dog, $28.00/day for two dogs (in the same kennel)

We do ask that you provide your pet's usual food when boarding with us to keep their digestive system happy, however we are able to feed your pet(s) our corn free food for an addition $2.00/day.


Cat Medical Requirements/Prices:
  • FVRCP vaccination
  • Proof of spay/neuter (additional $2.00/day fee if animal is unaltered)
  • Negative FeLV/FIV test result

Split level condo: $7.00/day per cat

We do ask that you provide your animal's usual food when boarding with us to keep their digestive system happy, however we are able to feed your animal(s) our grain free/corn free food for an addition $2.00/day.

If you are in need of having a pet rehomed, please fill out an intake application below for each animal you wish to surrender. Once you submit the application, please send photos of your animal(s) to pic@lostourhome.org along with your full name and the pet’s name. Applications will not be regarded as complete until photos are received.

Please keep in mind that intake is based entirely on availability and all animals must pass a behavioral evaluation prior to intake. Our facility utilizes a community environment with our dog kennels/cat rooms, so we are unable to accept cats that do not get along with other cats and/or dogs that do not get along with other dogs. Animals who fail evaluation will not be accepted into Lost Our Home under any circumstances. Please note that our facility is unable to take in semi-feral/feral animals.

Dog/Puppy Intake Fee: $35.00

Kitten (under 3 months) Intake Fee: $15.00

ALL cats/kittens must be tested for FeLV/FIV prior to intake and must test negative for both.

The FeLV/FIV combo test is a test that determines whether or not a cat has feline leukemia (FeLV) and/or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This test can be administered at any veterinary office or at any low cost spay and neuter clinic. At Lost Our Home, we utilize free roaming cat rooms, which means that our cats are not kenneled or separated from one another. For this reason, we are unable to accept cats that test positive for either FeLV/FIV for the health and safety of our other cats.

Lost Our Home uses email as a primary source of contact. Please be sure to check the email you provide to us for questions, responses, or anything else regarding your intake application. Due to the high demand our rescue has for animal intake, we are unable to hold spaces. If a staff member reaches out to you regarding an evaluation, it is important to respond as soon as possible to claim that space.

There is a $35.00 fee for each pet we take in FOR PERMANENT SURRENDER to help cover a small portion of the costs we incur to help your pet.  Click below to pay the intake fee online.

Pet Food Bank Program

Lost Our Home's Pet Food Bank helps families struggling to afford caring for their pets. We can provide pet food and potentially other items (dependent on availability) required to sustain your pet's health. A helping hand during hard times means you are able to keep your pet as a loving member of your family.

Pet Food Bank Program Rules:
  • Proper identification will be required for pick up
  • A new application must be filled out each time you are in need of assistance
  • Only one application per household will be permitted
  • Assistance can be provided for up to 6 animals
  • 6 times of assistance can be provided with at least 30 days in between each time of assistance
  • You cannot add any animals to your household while utilizing this program
  • If you are a participant in this program you will not be able to adopt a pet through Lost Our Home for a period of six months after discontinuing the use of the Pet Food Bank program
  • Eligibility to receive pet food through the program will be determined at the sole discretion of Lost Our Home.

Breaking any of the above rules will result in disqualification from the program permanently.

After approval, food is available for pick up during our regular business hours. If you are unable to come to our shelter to pick your food up, you can request delivery on the application. Delivery is NOT guaranteed. Delivery is completed solely by volunteers; therefore we are unable to guarantee if/when a delivery will occur.

Next Step

One we receive your form, we will contact you within 72 hours to let you know if you qualify for this program.  If you are do not hear from us in 72 hours, please be patient as we rely on volunteers to make the program work.  If you qualify, you will be given an appointment day/time to pick up your one-month supply of food, litter or other items.  If transportation is an issue, let us know and we will arrange delivery through volunteers if possible.

 

In the meantime, view Banfield Charities Nationwide Food Bank Locations.  Pet owners needing help to find food can contact national organizations and the  local resources located in your state. For senior pet owners, Banfield Charities also has a relationship with the Meals On Wheels Association of America who may also be able to help provide pet food.

Sojourner Center

Pet abuse and domestic violence go hand in hand. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, up to 40% of domestic violence victims do not escape their abusers because they are concerned about what will happen to their pets when they leave.

Having no domestic violence shelters in Maricopa County that allowed pets unless the pet was a service animal, left pet parents with the dreadful decision to save themselves at the risk of their pet being abused, tortured, killed or not to leave their abuser at all.

  • In 85% of homes where a woman or child is being abused there is also a pet that suffers abuse
  • Up to 71% of women with pets who enter a shelter reported that their abuser had injured, maimed, killed or threatened the family pet
  • One study found that 85% of women and 63% of children reported incidents of pet abuse after arriving at a shelter

Sojourner Center Pet Companion Shelter

In 2015, Lost Our Home Pet Rescue partnered with Sojourner Center, one of the largest domestic violence shelters in the United States, and established a Pet Companion Shelter so that women and children escaping domestic violence can bring their pets with them and heal together.

The Pet Companion Shelter is the first of its kind in Maricopa County and is located right on the Sojourner Center campus so women and children can be with their pets at any time. Lost Our Home Pet Rescue not only manages the shelter, but provides pet food, training and vet care for the pets and pet-related support to families living at the shelter to they have the resources and knowledge to be an even better pet parent when they leave the shelter.
